STABILISING TUBE LINES' POWER FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Consistent voltage levels are being guaranteed at stations on the London Underground, despite the extra requirements caused by significant improvements being made, thanks to the use (for the first time on London Underground) of voltage stabilisers from Claude Lyons. Their equipment was chosen in part because of the implementation of a successful solution for Hong Kong's Kowloon Canton Rail Company (KCRC) which presented a very similar supply voltage problem.

Tube Lines, responsible for the maintenance and renewal of the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines, tasked its principal contractor, Emcor, with providing a solution to ensure that a stable supply of electricity is maintained to all stations. Tube Lines is investing £550 million in station modernizations and enhancements over the first seven years of its contract with London Underground. Many of the improvements will make additional demands on the electricity supply, for example: new communication systems; better lighting and improved security systems. Mains power is supplied from transformer feed to designated underground stations, and then distributed on to other stations in the system and it is within these more distant areas of the network that problematic voltage drops could occur.

Claude Lyons is probably the only company with experience of providing voltage stabiliser solutions for a situation that, in effect, not only requires the stabilisers to boost voltage when necessary but is of a modular design enabling it to be assembled and installed underground.

Underground stations were surveyed to find out what voltage levels are currently available at each point in the system and what remedial action was necessary to provide optimum levels. Armed with this information, Claude Lyons identified the appropriate equipment specifications and designed a solution to meet present and future expansion requirements.

An additional difficulty in this project was the very confined space in which the equipment is to be located. To meet this challenge, new equipment was designed that could be supplied in modules and reassembled in situ - a substantial redesign.

The contract is a significant one for Claude Lyons, not only because of the high profile nature of the client but also because it draws on the strength of the company as a solutions provider for complex power problems. "We are proud to be involved with a project of this importance and delighted to be helping Tube Lines in its drive to deliver an outstanding underground system for London," is the Company Chairman William Lyons' summary.

Quality Management System
We are delighted that Claude Lyons Limited has successfully accomplished the transition from the earlier Quality Management Standard BS EN ISO 9001:2000 and has been granted registration to the latest Standard BS EN ISO 9001:2008.

The Transformer and Electrical Company Limited has also achieved registration to the new Standard.

This certification by BSI confirms that the Claude Lyons Group's quality management system meets internationally recognised quality standards and covers all aspects of the Group's operations from production and customer service to research and development.

Stabilising - Extremely poor mains voltage
We have recently extended our range of three-phase AC automatic voltage stabilisers to include new models that correct extremely wide input voltage variations of up to 50% and provide a stable output voltage to 0.5%.

Developed for use in locations where the mains voltage supply varies dramatically these Series TS-S20M voltage stabilisers are designed to correct very unstable mains voltages and provide a stabilised supply to critical installations such as telecommunications and medical equipment. They also feature fast correction speed with independent correction of each phase. Output can be set at 380/220, 400/230 or 415/240V and the six standard models provide respective current ratings of 8, 16, 25, 31, 42 and 84 amperes per phase. All incorporate over-voltage protection and switchable metering to read the input and output voltage of each phase. A bypass switch is available as a standard external option.

3rd Harmonic Rejection Transformers
Harmonic rejection transformers designed and developed by the Claude Lyons Group to combat the problem of harmonics in three phase systems are now to be marketed in the UK and overseas. These Harmonic rejection transformers have been successfully installed in many applications (case study) where high 3rd harmonic currents found in the neutral of three phase systems were causing random malfunctions of the loads. The installation of 3rd harmonic rejection transformers is a quick and easy way to reduce the 3rd harmonic and also reduces total harmonics on the system to a more acceptable level. The range is from 25 to 3000 Amps neutral current.
