Advanced Direct Digital Synthesiser
Meret Optical Communications, a world leader in frequency synthesiser products using both Direct Digital Synthesis and Fractional Phase-Locked-Loop technologies, and with over 19 years of experience with the Sciteq and Meret product lines, has introduced their most advanced DDS yet.

Low cost and compact, the ADS-53x direct digital synthesisers combine high speed, optional complementary output, modest power consumption and broad bandwidth into products that are easy to integrate into your system.

Available through Lyons Instruments, the ADS-53x direct digital synthesiser (DDS) uses Silicon technology to operate from 10 to 400 MHz with <0.46Hz frequency resolution. A proprietary and custom Silicon gate array is used to achieve the combination of wide frequency bandwidth, fine resolution, and fast switching speed that is characteristic of the ADS-531 (external DDS clock) and the ADS-532 series. A proprietary VCO is included in the module to provide the necessary DDS clock and the additional circuitry required to phase lock this VCO to an internal or external 10 MHz reference signal is also provided.

Specifications for both the ADS-531 and ADS-532 include 30 bit parallel frequency control logic, output of +6 dBm into 50 ohms, harmonics -20 dBc, spurious -40 dBc, and phase noise (ext 10 MHz) <-100 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz offset.

The ADS-532 with internal/external 10 MHz reference clock has dimensions of 127 x 180 x 29 mm, whilst the ADS-531 which provides output at up to 40% of the external clock reference (to 400 MHz with 1000 MHz reference) is just 95 x 121 x 23 mm.

BRITISH ELECTROMAGNETIC MEASUREMENTS CONFERENCE 2005
NPL, Teddington 14-17 November 2005
Lyons Instruments will be exhibiting some of their extensive range of Metrology, Test and Measurement Equipment. As well as the old favourites Measurements International, Andeen-Hagerling, Data Proof and Krohn-Hite (incorporating EDC), LI will be presenting two new companies which they now represent within the UK - Danbridge AS, the renowned manufacturer of Component Bridges, 30 kV Hi-pot Testers and Teraohmmeters, and Process Instruments, manufacturers of a comprehensive range of standard resistors and shunts including models from the former Leeds & Northrup and JRL ranges and featuring shunts to 3000A and HV dividers to 300 kV.

BEMC is an excellent opportunity to network with colleagues working at the forefront of electromagnetic measurements. In addition to plenary sessions, there will be breakout sessions to discuss individual topics, tutorials, hands-on demonstrations as well as an opportunity to visit NPL's world class laboratory facilities and meet with specialists in your field.

STABILISING TUBE LINES' POWER FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Consistent voltage levels are being guaranteed at stations on the London Underground, despite the extra requirements caused by significant improvements being made, thanks to the use (for the first time on London Underground) of voltage stabilisers from Claude Lyons. Their equipment was chosen in part because of the implementation of a successful solution for Hong Kong's Kowloon Canton Rail Company (KCRC) which presented a very similar supply voltage problem.

Tube Lines, responsible for the maintenance and renewal of the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines, tasked its principal contractor, Emcor, with providing a solution to ensure that a stable supply of electricity is maintained to all stations. Tube Lines is investing £550 million in station modernizations and enhancements over the first seven years of its contract with London Underground. Many of the improvements will make additional demands on the electricity supply, for example: new communication systems; better lighting and improved security systems. Mains power is supplied from transformer feed to designated underground stations, and then distributed on to other stations in the system and it is within these more distant areas of the network that problematic voltage drops could occur.

Claude Lyons is probably the only company with experience of providing voltage stabiliser solutions for a situation that, in effect, not only requires the stabilisers to boost voltage when necessary but is of a modular design enabling it to be assembled and installed underground.

Underground stations were surveyed to find out what voltage levels are currently available at each point in the system and what remedial action was necessary to provide optimum levels. Armed with this information, Claude Lyons identified the appropriate equipment specifications and designed a solution to meet present and future expansion requirements.

An additional difficulty in this project was the very confined space in which the equipment is to be located. To meet this challenge, new equipment was designed that could be supplied in modules and reassembled in situ - a substantial redesign.

The contract is a significant one for Claude Lyons, not only because of the high profile nature of the client but also because it draws on the strength of the company as a solutions provider for complex power problems. "We are proud to be involved with a project of this importance and delighted to be helping Tube Lines in its drive to deliver an outstanding underground system for London," is the Company Chairman William Lyons' summary.

Stabilising - Extremely poor mains voltage
We have recently extended our range of three-phase AC automatic voltage stabilisers to include new models that correct extremely wide input voltage variations of up to 50% and provide a stable output voltage to 0.5%.

Developed for use in locations where the mains voltage supply varies dramatically these Series TS-S20M voltage stabilisers are designed to correct very unstable mains voltages and provide a stabilised supply to critical installations such as telecommunications and medical equipment. They also feature fast correction speed with independent correction of each phase. Output can be set at 380/220, 400/230 or 415/240V and the six standard models provide respective current ratings of 8, 16, 25, 31, 42 and 84 amperes per phase. All incorporate over-voltage protection and switchable metering to read the input and output voltage of each phase. A bypass switch is available as a standard external option.

3rd Harmonic Rejection Transformers
Harmonic rejection transformers designed and developed by the Claude Lyons Group to combat the problem of harmonics in three phase systems are now to be marketed in the UK and overseas. These Harmonic rejection transformers have been successfully installed in many applications (case study) where high 3rd harmonic currents found in the neutral of three phase systems were causing random malfunctions of the loads. The installation of 3rd harmonic rejection transformers is a quick and easy way to reduce the 3rd harmonic and also reduces total harmonics on the system to a more acceptable level. The range is from 25 to 3000 Amps neutral current.

2ppm Stable Low Cost DC Source/Calibrator with Standards Accuracy
From Krohn-Hite Corporation and continuing with the Electronic Development's (EDC) tradition we are pleased to introduce the new Model 511 Precision DC Source/Calibrator. The Model 511 is a secondary standard that is highly stable and repeatable from ±100nVdc to ±10Vdc and provides traceable voltages for use in production, calibration labs, QA and QC departments, design labs or any place where an accurate, stable voltage is needed.

Using Krohn-Hite's state-of-the-art reference, the Model 511 provides extremely accurate (10ppm) and stable (2ppm for 24 hours) voltages over 3 ranges, allowing the output to be set from ±100nVdc to ±11.11110Vdc with a resolution of 1ppm of range. Wideband noise to 100kHz is less than 5µVrms. Compliance current is 100mA. Applications include the calibration of precision A/D converters, production line testing, strip chart recorders and calibration of data logging systems.
